Ted Stevens, the former United States senator who was killed Monday night in a plane crash at the age of 86, helped shape modern Alaska with federal laws and billions in federal dollars.
Serving in the Senate for 40 years, longer than any other Republican, he was known as a fierce and often hot-tempered advocate for his state.

But that long and productive Senate career ended ignominiously. In October 2008, a federal jury in the District of Columbia found that Mr. Stevens had concealed more than $250,000 in gifts and convicted him on seven felony counts. Eight days later, he lost a bid for a seventh term to Mayor Mark Begich of Anchorage, a Democrat.

The former Detroit Red Wings captain and executive was introduced Tuesday as Brian Lawton's replacement during a press conference at St. Pete Times Forum. Lawton and coach Rick Tocchet were fired April 12.

Yzerman has worked as a vice president for the Red Wings, the only team he played for during a 22-year career in which he scored 692 goals, amassed 1,755 points and was part of three Stanley Cup winners.

Jose Lima never looked back, When did Jose Lima become a must-watch attraction? As soon as you met him.

For me, it was 1994, when Lima was an effervescent (of course) 21-year-old who recently had pitched a no-hitter for Detroit's Class AAA farm team in Toledo, Ohio.

The story was supposed to be about this kid who came within one walk of a perfect game, then stayed on the field for 45 minutes signing autographs, finally showered and signed another couple hundred after leaving the clubhouse.

Spin is one of three basic properties of electrons, along with charge and mass. Basically, spin describes the way an electron moves around an atom's nucleus (which includes the protons and neutrons) - the spin can either be "up" or "down."

In the new study, researchers figured out how to change the spin of electrons in cobalt atoms (a metallic element with 27 protons and 27 electrons). Although none of the execs has -- at least as far as anyone is admitting -- made direct overtures to Palin, they are readying their battle plans if she decides to give up her day job.

The hope on the Street was that the market was finding some footing after eight sessions of devastating losses that sent the Dow down nearly 2,400 points. But while a rebound had been expected at some point, Wall Street can expect to see volatile, back-and-forth trading in the coming days and weeks as investors work through their concerns about the banking sector, the stagnant credit markets and the overall economy.

Lindsay Lohan wants deposition sealed .Lawyers for Lohan filed a motion on Wednesday seeking a judge's order barring any filming of the actress' upcoming deposition in a case filed by gal pal Samantha Ronson.

Wells Fargo agrees to buy Wachovia

NEW YORK - Wachovia says it agreed to be acquired by San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. in a $15.1 billion all-stock deal. But Citigroup now demands that Wachovia abide by the terms of its earlier deal to buy Wachovia's banking operations.
The clash sets up a battle over who will win Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia.

The Citigroup deal would have been done with the help of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., but the Wells deal would be done without it. The head of the FDIC said the agency is standing behind the agreement it made with Citigroup.

Thailand's Dutch Mill Group made the announcement even though the country's food inspection authorities said they had not found dangerous amounts of the industrial chemical melamine in any foods tested.

Taiwan and Laos, meanwhile, announced measures to stop the sale of some milk products, after tests in the two countries found melamine in several brands of milk powder originating from China.

Milk containing melamine has been blamed for killing four Chinese babies and sickening more than 54,000 others, sparking global concerns about food products made with Chinese milk or milk powder.

Thailand's Food and Drug Administration has been impounding newly imported milk powder from China at ports around the country, pending laboratory analysis. The agency said it is testing nearly 100 food items.

Earlier this week, the agency found small traces of melamine in milk powder imported from China by Dutch Mill, but the levels were legally acceptable for human consumption, Deputy Secretary-General Manit Arunakoon said.

The agency also cleared samples of Dutch Mill's pasteurized milk and yoghurt products.

But the company said it will return 122 tons of newly imported powdered milk even though none of it had been found dangerous so far.

"We want to return it to make sure our products are safe for our customers," company president Thirayuth Chaisawangwong said. He said test results were expected by week's end "but we don't want to take any risk even if the test is negative."

Dutch Mills already stopped using Chinese powdered milk as raw material for producing pasteurized milk products, he added.

The expanding scandal has prompted countries with trade ties to China to move gingerly.

Thailand's public health minister, Chalerm Yoobamrung, warned Wednesday that officials should be prudent about what they say because they could affect trade with the Asian giant.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking the ice cream maker to begin using breast milk in its products instead of cow's milk, saying it would reduce the suffering of cows and calves and give ice cream lovers a healthier product.

The idea got a cool reception Thursday from Ben & Jerry's officials, the company's customers and even La Leche League International, the world's oldest breast-feeding support organization, which promotes the practice — for babies, anyway.

PETA wrote a letter to company founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield on Tuesday, telling them cow's milk is hazardous and that milking them is cruel.

"If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers — and cows — would reap the benefits," wrote Tracy Reiman, executive vice president of the animal rights advocacy group. She said dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies and obesity.

Ashley Byrne, a campaign coordinator for PETA, acknowledged the implausibility of substituting breast milk for cow's milk, but said it's no stranger than humans consuming the milk of another species.

"We're aware this idea is somewhat absurd, and that putting it into practice is a stretch. At the time same, it's pretty absurd for us to be drinking the milk of cows," she said.

It takes about 12 pounds — or 1 1/2 gallons of milk — to make a gallon of ice cream. Ben & Jerry's, which gets its milk exclusively from Vermont cows, won't say how much milk it uses or how much ice cream it sells.

Sheriff's deputies doing a routine check this week at a southern Illinois bar say they discovered a not-so-routine sight. Authorities allege that 33-year-old Janet Brannon was naked while serving bar patrons at the Cabin Tavern in Delhi (DEL'-ee).

Brannon was arrested and charged with misdemeanor public indecency. She was freed on $8,000 bond.

She was the only bar employee working at the time, so the tavern was closed Thursday.
